Tips & How-Tos
What we have learned on the water, and step-by-step guides to help you land more fish.
Tips & Tricks
Watch the birds
Diving birds mean bait is being pushed to the surface. Bigger fish are usually right under them.
Find the temperature break
A sharp change in water temperature or color is where bait stacks up. Check sea surface charts before you leave the dock.
Go lighter on the leader
In clear blue water, fish get leader shy. Step down to fluorocarbon when the bites slow down.
Set your drag at home
A good starting point is about a quarter to a third of your line's rated strength. Test it with a scale before the trip.
Fish before the front
Many anglers swear by the bite as a weather front moves in. Keep safety first and watch the marine forecast.
Know the rules
Carry your state saltwater fishing license, and check the federal permits and limits before keeping tuna or billfish.
